This "remastered" CD for reasons known only to its creators is lacking threeof the great songs on the original album, these being "Take My Mother Home," "La Bamba" and "All My Trials, Lord< Soon Be Over." A shame that borders oncultural crime.
I really feel this is a sham and a shame. As I was listening to it I started to get the feeling some songs were missing: I still have the original vinyl version and am looking at it right now; there are indeed songs missing from the CD version: "Take my Mother Home," "Man Piaba," "All my trials, and "Merci Bon Dieu." Nearly 20 to 25 percent of the original concert has been deleted, But the CD is still being marketed using the same exact cover as the orignal vinyl version. As some one else said, this would have been a five star if the complete concert had been included. I just received and listened to the CD "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall"[[ASIN:B000002W95 ]].
For anyone who is a Belafonte fan, this CD is an absolute must. This is Harry's concert at Carnegie Hall in 1959.
Some of the missing songs can be found on the mp3 downloads. In part because the missing songs are so rare, and the missing chatter was part of what made this recording so unique. The last song on the CD is nowhere to be found on my original vinyl. The original live recording was of a concert to save it.
Downgraded from the 5 star a true copy would have gotten. But the audience interraction is gone perhaps forever. Did they just realize they had to fill something in for the butchering they did to the master. I had bought the CD of this years ago to "protect" my vinyl copy.
It was so successful, the Hall was kept open, and he returned the next year for another recorded concert "Return to Carnegie Hall". Such a shame. The original is heads and shoulders above the CD. The story is Carnegie Hall was in danger of closing.
His version of "Matilda" is a hoot. This is music as only Belafonte can do it. The tunes stay with you and overall it is an enjoyable experience to listen to this CD.
